Mercedes Schlapp, the White House strategist for communications, has a tough job. She's faced with a president that acts as his own director of communications and a myriad of legal disputes which can disrupt the administration's messaging strategy and Cabinet secretaries caught up in their own disputes. Schlapp is, however, maintained her focus on her job. She works closely in conjunction with White House political affairs and committees on legislation as well as policy shops and the overall communications department to oversee the rollout of policies. In her current role, she has concentrated on various topics, including safety at schools and opioids. She doesn't interact with reporters at all in her current position. She gained attention when she was named as the candidate to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp does not have a straightforward job as White House strategic communication adviser. The White House strategic communications adviser must deal numerous legal issues that may affect the communications strategy of the administration, along with Cabinet secretaries involved in scandals of their own. Schlapp has managed to stay in the right frame of mind and stay on top of her game and work in conjunction with White House teams in political issues, legislative affairs, and policy as well the communications department in general. The focus is on topics like the safety of schools, opioids, infrastructure, and trade. Schlapp's current job doesn't involve any contact with journalists. She did draw a flurry of attention in March after her name was suggested as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. The fighting has been nasty. The ally of Schlapp's, Tony Sayegh, and another candidate for the position with the same name, Tony, began fighting on the news. Schlapp said that after that the Washington Examiner had published an article with negative comments about Sayegh's personality, she contacted Sayegh in a private chat.
